Occupational Health and Safety (OSH)


HR practitioners implement various king of strategies in order to attract, retain, and develop the best talent in the organization. Those strategies may useless if employees face occupational accidents or diseases. Not only employees sometimes community also face accidents and diseases due to maladministration of the manufacturing organizations. Some multinational and large-scale organizations have separate teams to manage occupational health and safety in the organization. But in a small and medium-size organization does not have separate team for that and health and safety responsibilities are within the human resources department (Armstrong, 2012).

How to use the PDCA cycle to develop and manage OSH in the organization.

The plan-Do-Check-Act framework is a continual improvement cycle and aims to achieve a better balance between the behavioral and systems aspects of health and safety management (ASTUTIS, 2019).

Plan.
In planning stage Identifying where the organization now and then identifying where the organization wants to be. Based on risk analysis, policies, and procedures developed in this stage.
Eg-: Working at Height procedure, Emergency response procedure, etc.

Do.
Policies and procedures implementation happened in this stage.
For example, when employees working at height, they suppose to follow working at height procedure.

Check.
This is an important stage. Once implemented the plan organization need to ensure that it is working effectively. To achieve this, organizations need to measure performance.
Eg-: conduct regular inspection, internal audit, Health surveillance, Environmental monitoring, etc.

Act.
If the implementation does not happen as per the plan, the organization needs to change personnel or procedure to rectify identify issues during the previous process.  

Advantage of good occupational health and safety system
There are several benefits of good OSH system but not limited to the following:
  • Reduce accident and incident cost
  • Improve productivity
  • Compliance with regulatory requirements.
  • Increase reputation
  • Increase staff morale & relation (Beakon, 2020).


PDCA is continuously improve cycle and it used to every management system. PLAN what you want to do; DO it; CHECK its meeting your plan; ACT upon it if it is not or improvements can be made. Due to poor occupational health and safety, not only fatality also property and environmental damage happed worldwide. Thorugh effective OSH system organization able to obtain several advantages as mention above.
