Employee Engagement


As per the Balain and Sparrow (2009) engagement happens when employees are committed to their work, company, and motivated to achieve a high level of performance. The following aspects are interrelated on engagement.
  • Job engagement: Job engagement happens when employees give extra effort on the job because they feel their jobs interesting, challenging, and rewarding. 
  • Organizational engagement: organizational engagement happens when employees believe that the organization is a great place to work and to continue to work.

Job engagement can be increase through good job design, reward in the broadest sense, training, and development programs, improving quality of leadership, and performance management while organizational engagement develops through high management involvement (Armstrong, 2012).

Employee engagement at Five Star Bank- Upstate New York

Five star bank was not able to clearly defined values and set expectations with associates. The result of that employees was left to their own interpretations of what the values meant and how to do them, which was leading to inconsistencies and difficulty in measuring impact (RewardGateway, 2020).

Bank worked with a third-party consulting firm that provides consulting services on employee engagement to refine its existing values. As well as a strategic recognition program implemented by them as a tool for capturing, sharing, discussing, and learning from best practices across the company. Also, a leadership coaching program conducted by the company for the senior leaders to build the skills and habits for creating the environment for more engagement  (RewardGateway, 2020).

In the past three years, 83% of managers and 79% of non-managers have been participating in the strategic recognition program. The net interest of the bank increased to 24.6 million dollars and the total increased by 12.3% and the total deposit increased by 9.7%. Apart from that, banks ranked number 3 in the number of small business administration loans in the Rochester region  (RewardGateway, 2020).

  • Encourage and pay for real vacations
  • Demonstrating employee appreciation in visible ways
  • Senior-level support for 360-degree feedback sessions
  • Develop clear career progression plans and mentorship opportunities
  • Provide well-organized team building activities
  • Offer mentorship opportunities between senior and junior employees
  • Create an inclusive work environment

By enhancing employee engagement organizations achieve their goal while satisfying their employees. Today many organizations in Sri Lanka as well as other counties consider employee engagement and develop and implement various types of strategies. A strategy may vary from organization to organization and there is third party consulting firms to assist organizations for enhance employee engagement.

  2. A trending topic..well balanced article Thilina. Armstrong, (2014) discussed that engagement occurs when people are committed to their work and organization and are motivated to attain high performance standards. Applying the theory into your industry would be more interested.
